Lesson 7: Risk Management
Regardless of the hazard, occupational health and safety should be ensured by a specific risk management process which involves employers and employees in the following steps, as outlined in Section 22 of the Workplace Health and Safety Act.
Risk Management Process
1. Identify hazard
2. Assess the risk
3. Decide control measures
4. Implement control measures
5. Monitor and review control measures
There are many ways of identifying hazards including:
- Direct observation
- Inspections
- Routine hazard information
- Accident and sickness reports
- Sick leave statistics
- Employee surveys
- Employee complaints.
As an employee, you may notice things in your workplace that you think are health and safety hazards. You should report these, following the appropriate procedures established at your workplace. Workplace health and safety representatives or officers will undertake inspections and analyse the data collected in the ways listed above to identify hazards in the workplace.
